Qualche anno fa, dopo avere riascoltato “From Whales To Jupiter, And Beyond The Stars To Rainbohemia” dei Moonflowers (di Bristol, gruppo cult UK dei 90s), mi lanciai in una ricerca sul web lungo le propaggini recenti di una family tree già piuttosto 
notevole. Dai vari membri originali il chitarrista Jesse D Vernon, memoria storica del gruppo e testimone di un impulso creativo senza limiti, offrì l’ennesima buona vibrazione conducendomi fino a This Is The Kit e Kate Stables, moglie ed anima artistica del progetto avviato insieme nei primi anni 2000. La scoperta rivelò una discografia sublime germogliata da radici folk e supportata da un grande entusiasmo critico.
Le prime canzoni danzano su corde elettroacustiche illuminate dalla voce di Kate e dal suo talento compositivo avvalorato come strumentista da avvolgenti arpeggi banjo-chitarristici. Sono le intime armonie acid folk di “Krülle Bol” (esordio del 2008 registrato in Italia e prodotto da John Parish) che risuonano evocando a tratti gli incanti di Vashti Bunyan. Poi 
espandono in un caleidoscopio di linguaggi musicali folk-rock-jazz-blues, componendo un dialogo moderno tra sperimentazione e raffinati sviluppi pop che riflettono echi di Joni Mitchell e Beth Orton. Le forme pure ed essenziali degli esordi espresse in duo si intensificano così verso nuove sonorità abbracciando anche una comunità di straordinari musicisti come un universo in movimento. Un percorso senza frontiere, in doppia cittadinanza tra Bristol e Parigi, sviluppato durante gli anni 2010 attraverso tre albums “Wriggle Out The Restless” (2010, di cui è uscita anche una versione ‘remixes’), “Bashed Out” (2015) e “Moonshine Freeze” (2017).
Quando Kate Stables nel 2018 inizia a lavorare su nuove canzoni viene invitata a 
partecipare all’album dei National “I Am Easy To Find” e al successivo tour americano: “penso che mi abbia fatto molto bene.. essere lontano dalle mie canzoni e la responsabilità di guidare una band o un progetto, solo dimenticarmene per un pò.. ha davvero aiutato la mia scrittura e il superamento di tutto ciò di cui avevo bisogno”. Un respiro ampio dove le esperienze di condivisione sono vitali per avere il proprio racconto in testa e riuscire ad ascoltare anche quello degli altri. In questa dimensione, sensibilità ed empatia generano splendide sorellanze artistiche in reciproche collaborazioni con altre voci femminili di una certa rilevanza nella scena odierna come Rozi Plain e Rachel Dadd nei rispettivi “What A Boost” e “Flux”, tra i top album del 2019.
Nel frattempo le nuove canzoni prendono forma e trovano un produttore: Josh Kaufman. L’incontro avviene a New York per la registrazione della cover di ‘Woyaya’, dei leggendari Osibisa, insieme ad Anaïs Mitchell partner di Josh Kaufman nel progetto Bonny Light Horseman (che ha esordito all’inizio del 2020 in chiave american alt-folk con un interessante lavoro omonimo a cui partecipa anche Kate Stables). Le prove per il nuovo album avvengono in un cottage isolato in Galles e i musicisti che accompagnano Kate oltre al marito Jesse D Vernon (chitarra e tastiere) sono gli amici di sempre: Rozi Plain (basso, voce), Neil Smith (chitarra) e Jamie Whitby-Coles (batteria, voce). Nasce “Off Off On” quinto album di This Is The Kit ufficialmente registrato nel Wiltshire ai prestigiosi Real World Studios con il supporto di una sezione fiati e finito appena in tempo “poco prima che la pandemia costringesse il mondo a premere il pulsante di pausa”.
La storica Rough Trade rinnova il sostegno anche nel dare un degno seguito a “Moonshine Freeze” e l’illustratore autore di graphic novel Joff Winterhart realizza l’artwork. I dettagli in cui la matrice folk trascende la tradizione attingono a un diario di spazi sonori aperti che vivono di emozioni dentro il visibile, “i ritmi imprevedibili della vita, due passi indietro, un passo avanti… Oscillando tra posti buoni e cattivi, dentro e fuori”. “Off Off On”. Tutto l’album è pervaso da una libertà di espressione creativa dove variazioni inconsuete vibrano di una sottile energia esplorativa in un succedersi fluido e armonico. A volte inebriante nei colori di ‘Found Out’ e ‘This is What You Did’, altre più etereo nelle trasparenze di ‘Started Again’ e ‘Slider’ solcata dal sax di Lorenzo Prati (ex Rae formazione primi anni 2010 ispirata al Canterbury sound).
Il banjo di Kate danza in un flusso di tastiere, contrappunti fiatistici, chitarre mesmeriche. La voce imprime poesia e rivela meraviglie come ‘No Such Thing’ e ‘Coming You To Nowhere’ che sembrano trarre linfa dai primi Caravan. Profonde melodie vagamente ambient distendono un orizzonte di magnifiche ballate (il lato B nell’edizione vinilica) dove contemplare ‘Carry Us Please’, ‘Off Off On’, ‘Shinbone Soap’, ‘Was Magician’ e ‘Keep Going’. Racconti sonori di un album che avvince parlando contemporaneamente al corpo e all’anima.

A few years ago, after having listened to “From Whales To Jupiter, And Beyond The Stars To Rainbohemia” by Moonflowers (UK cult band of the 90s from Bristol), I hurled into a web search along the recent offshoots of an already quite remarkable family tree. From the various original members the guitarist Jesse Vernon, historical memory of the band and witness of an unlimited creative impulse, offered yet another good vibration leading me to This Is The Kit and Kate Stables, wife and artistic soul of the project started together in the early years 2000. The discovery revealed a sublime discography sprouting from folk roots and supported by great critical enthusiasm.
The first songs dance on electro-acoustic strings illuminated by Kate’s voice and her compositional talent supported as an instrumentalist by captivating banjo-guitar arpeggios. They are the intimate acid folk harmonies of “Krülle Bol” (2008 debut recorded in Italy and produced by John Parish) that resonate evoking at times the charms of Vashti Bunyan. Then they expand into a kaleidoscope of folk-rock-jazz-blues musical languages, composing a modern dialogue between experimentation and refined pop developments that reflect echoes of Joni Mitchell and Beth Orton. The pure and essential forms of the beginnings expressed in duo thus intensify towards new sounds, also embracing a community of extraordinary musicians like a universe in motion. A path without borders, in dual citizenship between Bristol and Paris, developed during the 2010s through three albums “Wriggle Out The Restless” (2010, of which a ‘remixes’ version was also released), “Bashed Out” (2015) and “Moonshine Freeze” (2017).
When Kate Stables in 2018 starts working on new songs she is invited by National to participate in their album “I Am Easy To Find” and the subsequent American tour: “I think it did me loads of good .. It was so brilliant when I was writing to be away from my songs and the responsibility of being in charge of a band or a project – just to forget about that for a while .. it really helped my writing and my getting through whatever I needed to get through”. A broad breath where sharing experiences are vital to have one’s own story in mind and to be able to listen to that of others. In this dimension, sensitivity and empathy generate splendid artistic sisterhoods in mutual collaborations with other female voices of a certain importance in today’s scene such as Rozi Plain and Rachel Dadd in their respective “What A Boost” and “Flux”, among the top albums of 2019.
In the meantime the new songs take shape and find a producer: Josh Kaufman. The meeting takes place in New York for the recording a cover of ‘Woyaya’, by legendary Osibisa, together with Anaïs Mitchell partner of Josh Kaufman in the Bonny Light Horseman project (which debuted at the beginning of 2020 in an American alt-folk key with an interesting homonymous work in which Kate Stables also participates). Rehearsals for the new album take place at an isolated cottage in Wales and the musicians accompanying Kate as well as her husband Jesse D Vernon (guitar and keyboards) are long-time friends: Rozi Plain (bass, vocals), Neil Smith (guitar) and Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums, vocals). “Off Off On” is born, the fifth album of This Is The Kit officially recorded in Wiltshire at the prestigious Real World Studios with the support of a horn section and finished just in time “just before the pandemic forced the world to hit the pause button”.
The historic Rough Trade also renews its support in giving a worthy follow-up to “Moonshine Freeze” and the illustrator author of graphic novels Joff Winterhart makes the artwork. The details in which the folk matrix transcends tradition draw on a diary of open sound spaces that live on emotions within the visible, “life’s glitchy rhythms, two steps backwards, one step forwards… Swinging between good places and bad places, inside and out”. “Off Off On”. The whole album is pervaded by a freedom of creative expression where unusual variations vibrate with a subtle exploratory energy in a fluid and harmonious succession. Sometimes exciting in the colors of ‘Found Out’ and ‘This is What You Did’, others more ethereal in the transparencies of ‘Started Again’ and ‘Slider’ crossed by the sax of Lorenzo Prati (former Rae, Canterbury sound’s inspired band).
Kate’s banjo dances in a flow of keyboards, winds counterpoints, mesmeric guitars. The voice communicate poetry and reveals wonders like ‘No Such Thing’ and ‘Coming You To Nowhere’ that seem to draw nourishment from the early Caravan. Deep, vaguely ambient melodies extend an horizon of magnificent ballads (the B side in the vinyl edition) where contemplate ‘Carry Us Please’, ‘Off Off On’, ‘Shinbone Soap’, ‘Was Magician’ and ‘Keep Going’. Sound tales of an album that captivates by speaking at the same time to the body and soul.
