The Asteroid No.4, The Belltowers, Bhopal’s Flowers, The Flower Machine, Sacred Orange, The Small Breed

The Small Breed

“An Elderflower Parliament / Figures Made Of Sound”

Sacred Orange

“Mister Opel / Away My Love / Crystal Sunlight”

Asteroid No. 4

“Under My Umbrella / House of the Seventh Moon”

The Flower Machine

“Through a London Window / One in a Million”

A Can of Bees”, immensitudine Soft Boys.

The Belltowers

“Tomorrow Will Remain / Sunshine Nursery Rhymes”

Bhopal’s Flowers

“Diamond Queen / The Majestic Purple Sky”

Una risposta a “The Asteroid No.4, The Belltowers, Bhopal’s Flowers, The Flower Machine, Sacred Orange, The Small Breed”

  1. English translation…

The Asteroid No.4, The Belltowers, Bhopal’s Flowers, The Flower Machine, Sacred Orange, The Small Breed

Today we talk about the Hypnotic Bridge Records of Palo Alto, California and what it published in the first half of 2020. This label has distinguished itself for devotion to the single 7″ vinyl cult wrapped in magnificent covers and to the psychedelia oriented by particular harmonic developments. An activity that since 2016 has intensified in the last two years thanks to the passionate work of the founder Stu Pope who (intrigued by the Deram singles period ’66 – ’67 of Move, Timebox, Syn, 23rd Turnoff , Eyes of Blue, Tintern Abbey, Outer Limits …) identifies as ‘part of a dynamic counterculture that includes not only music, but art, fashion, unique venues, and other forms of collective inspiration’. A research for elegant pop euphonies in the neopsychedelic panorama also in the context of a new generation of groups fascinated by scenarios of expressive freedom. Musicians united in drawing from the 60s ideally but distinct in various nuances to actualize them creatively (a regenerating impulse of underground waves that has regularly occurred since the mid-70s in each subsequent decade). The catalog so far consists of 18 singles largely works by South Californian bands such as Triptides, Creation Factory (ex-Mystic Braves), Turns, Electric Looking Glass. There are also European bands including the British Higher State (ex-Mystreated) and other US groups such as Frankie and the Witch Fingers, Magic Shoppe, Reverberations. And then directly from the 80s Paisley Underground motions the neo60s pioneers Marshmallow Overcoat of Timothy Gassen tragically passed away last December at 57 years old. Also known for his radio and journalistic activities, he is the author of ‘The Knights of Fuzz – The new garage and psychedelic explosion’ essential guide with the latest edition updated in the mid-2000s. Time to record “Wait for Her / The Marshmallow Theme “, the last beautiful single that Hypnotic Bridge welcomes in the sign of an inexhaustible passion. A passion dedicated to those who love to collect these gems but also to those who think that the 60s extend with a timeless innovative artistic vitality.

    The Small Breed
“An Elderflower Parliament / Figures Made Of Sound” (HYP 12)
The first single Hypnotic Bridge of 2020 is made in Europe. We are in Holland to celebrate the second Small Breed work after the eponymous EP 12 “(Bickerton Records, 2018). Well fed by a very fertile musical country in the geology of the 60s (Outsiders, Q 65, Group 1850 … ) grow as a quintet and develop dense melodic lines with a vibrant interweaving of keys and strings cadenced by a rhythmic component that is often tinged with folk. The charm is enhanced with ‘An Elderflower Parliament’ nestled in a Kaleidoscope (UK) cosmos and with the dizzying pinkfloydian visions of ‘Figures Made Of Sound’, a healthy infusion of elderflowers to imagine figures made of sound.

    Sacred Orange
“Mister Opel / Away My Love / Crystal Sunlight” (HYP 14)
Born from an idea Neil Soiland (ex-guitarist of Creation Factory) Sacred Orange is a supergroup that involves the psychedelic youth of Los Angeles including members of Electric Looking Glass, Triptides, Dream Phases, Frankie and the Witch Fingers. A ‘studio’ project that expresses itself collectively in the sign of a shared inspiration and concretizes the first ideas in this EP. Disruptive music of luxuriant energy triggered by ‘Mister Opel’ that whizzes along the proto-psychedelic west coast of Byrds and Love in a vortex of phasing and vocal echoes dotted with mobile bass and resonant McCartney school. A variable motion that floats in the sunshine pop essences of ‘Away My Love’ to regain space in the Chocolate Watchband dimension of ‘Crystal Sunlight’. Intoxicating sacred orange juice, solar heat, sound colors.

    Asteroid No. 4
“Under My Umbrella / House of the Seventh Moon” (HYP 15)
In activity since the mid-90s, the Asteroid No. 4 are among the most long-lived and creative groups in the various US neopsychedelic scenes. Originally from Philadelphia and protagonists of the Paisley Sound rebirth then in 2011 in happy artistic continuation with the transfer to the west coast to San Francisco. A musical existence that shines a tenth time in 2018 with “Collide” (13 O’Clock Records) and as many times with singles. Now on the eve of the new album “Northern Song” already announced, they appear on the Californian label with two new harmonic glows. Under My Umbrella’ transports UK sound into the Magical Mystery Tour in a super tribute to the Beatlesian masterpiece between reverse guitars, mellotron and vocal echoes. Prelude to the psychedelic folk wonder ‘House of the Seventh Moon’ which rises harmoniously from acoustic guitars and keyboards to flex towards India on a carpet of soft tablas. Amazing stay in the house of the seventh moon awaiting good news from the north.

    The Flower Machine
“Through a London Window / One in a Million” (HYP 16)
A flower car drives the Pacific Coast Highway to San Louis Obispo, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. On the dashboard a photo of Syd Barrett and Peter Quinnell driver, the voice and guitar of The Flower Machine on the road since the early 2000s accompanied by various crews conducted in a thoughtful and precious discography. “Chalk Dust Dream of the Tea Cozy Mitten Company” (Microindie, 2004), “Lavender Lane” (Rainbow Quartz, 2010), “Tangerines and Opium Trees” (PinkPonyAirlines, 2015) configure a work that starts from the typical places of English psychedelia to move forward in a kaleidoscope of effects, wrapping with electro-acoustic phrases, polyrhythms and vocal arrangements with elegance and ease. Elements that rise inspired by breathing ‘Through a London Window’ a fresh guitar breeze dreamed by “A Can of Bees”, immensity Soft Boys. ‘One in a Million’ (cover of an unreleased Pink Floyd song played in their first live sets) climbs moody in the syd-eral space generating perfumes and pollen to guard the creative cycle.

    The Belltowers
“Tomorrow Will Remain / Sunshine Nursery Rhymes” (HYP 17)
We stay south for a coast to coast to Orlando, Florida. The Belltowers were formed in 2004 around the voice and guitar of Paul Mutchler active since the early 90s with the garage-psych band The Lears (three beautiful singles collected then with extra material in the compilation “The Story So Far …”). Even their music develops along an essential path and mediated by various changes of formation. Two beautiful singles to precede the debut abum “Day Breakaway” (Twenty Stone Blatt Records, 2015) for a musical history made of folk-rock, psychedelia and power pop. Melodic radiosities performed by vintage instruments like Rickenbacker, Gretsch, Epiphone, Fender and Guild. Sounds that shine in constant jingle jangle luminescence and reproduce in beauty with this new single. ‘Tomorrow Will Remain’ engages in the Byrds – Rain Parade vastness by spreading bright energy that accelerates in the melodic whirlwind of ‘Sunshine Nursery Rhymes’ where the imagination can still create.

    Bhopal’s Flowers
“Diamond Queen / The Majestic Purple Sky” (HYP18)
From south to north Eight Miles High to Montreal, Canada. A point where also east and west (musically) meet thanks to Bhopal’s Flowers. This collective of young musicians is led by Lionel Pezzano ‘a multi-instrumentalist who has lost himself between India, Europe and North America’, finding an artistic balance of great originality. A spiritual dimension where sitar, tanpura and tablas intertwine Rickenbacker 12 strings and Höfner bass in constant evolution after the self-produced debut album “Lovesongs & Psychedelic Tones” (2018). Ecstatic labyrinths that develop on modal scales experimented by Byrds and Beatles but also in the underground 60s scenario by groups such as Clem Alford’s Sagrams then Magic Carpet (and recently in the magnificent Uniting of Opposities). ‘Diamond Queen’ is omnidirectional fluid sparkling with reverberations, a mystical dance of electric sounds that intensify in the stellar freakbeat of ‘The Majestic Purple Sky’. Horizon of vivid perspectives from which to listen admiringly.
