That in the Sunset Rise. Una fantastica Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun celebrata dal fuzz drone di Christian Luke Brady (Fargon) e dalla backwards guitar infinitesimale di Ryley Walker.

“Spiral Galaxy” merita un posto nell’atlante musicale delle galassie, creativamente possibile, galatticamente sensibile, semplicemente stellare.

Chicago’s astronomical observatory reveals a new star dance and underground music stories nearby. Cosmic matter from a spiral galaxy in verse of astrophysical poetry in the interpretation of two multifaceted artists: Sara Gossett (flute and voice) and Plastic Crimewave (guitar, synth, voice). Spiral Galaxy. Union of visionary ideas and magnetic research developed by space rock, kosmische musik and folk sources also in adhering to modern expressions of psychedelia. In parallel to their underground practices, a graphic talent revealed on the album cover and extragalactic projects, such as Sara’s other illustrations of the new Green Seagull and Striped Bananas albums that we will talk about soon or the intense scenario traced in 25 years by Steve Krakow alias Plastic Crimewave. Among many activities, he is also a publisher with the entirely hand-drawn magazine Galactic Zoo Dossier and organizer of the Million Tongues Festival in Chicago. In music is konwn as Plastic Crimewave to which he add/alternates Sound, Syndicate or Expanse in manifesting with various lineups and psychedelic orientations.

After three self-produced live tapes on Galactic Tape Archive (of which “Eternal Spirit World Meditations” is also on bandcamp together with “Live at Chicago Psychfest XI”), Spiral Galaxy record in the studio and debut with this self-titled album. A great outpouring of fantasy where everything is possible thanks to the large participation of the musicians involved. In its development it shows both the unusual and unpredictable aspects of experimentation than the more evident aspects of the passionate tribute. And once again the good ideas are born after a journey through time starting from the cover (and from the long playing 33 rpm format) which sets the coordinates in the krautrock dial at the beginning of the 70s, inspired by the graphics of the Ohr and Kosmische Musik discs (labels founded by Rolf -Ulrich Kaiser and Gille Lettman). The music polarized by the sidereal flows of the Berlin school of electronic music reimagines Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel, the spheroidal reverberations of the echoguitars of Manuel Gottsching and Achim Reichel, the globular synths of Klaus Schulze, the folk magic expanded in the fluted space of Yatha Sidra, Flute and Voice, Kalacakra. In the distance you can also see Nik Turner Hawkwind’s magic flute (and in “Spiral Galaxy 28948”, a coincidence?).

In constant fluctuation the spiral galaxy surrounds a carrier central bulge in the glissates of Sara’s transverse flute and in the high-variance timbric guitar phrasing of Plastic Crimewave which also operates on the effects processed by the synthesizers. An acoustic – electric – electronic scenario that extends from the east as a meditative practice with ‘Celestial Omen’ on the devotional chant of Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple) which proceeds by growing in a sublime chorus together with Alisha Sufit (Magic Carpet). Gravitational interactions of psychedelic folk create immersive mantras of raga scales where flute and sitar (by Adam Krakow, Hands of Hydra, Steve’s brother) cross nucleus of reverberated guitars, mellotron and field recordings (by Matthew Shaw, Tex La Homa). ‘Tragique Mechanique’ reflects hypnotic frequencies captured by Faust waves on the voices of Jean Hervé Peron and his wife Jeanne-Marie. The breath of Protovulcan’s Will MacLean synthesizers creates dense clouds of rising mystery, a strange cosmic dawn lifted by the flute in Taralie Peterson’s sax vortexes (Spires That in the Sunset Rise). On the horizon, the motorik of ‘Machine D’ moving a soft 100 bpm drum machine that cadences air columns vibrated by the flute and colored by glissando guitar in extraordinary cyclical sequences. The spell continues with ‘Pendlewitches’ in the dark Britannia meanders inspired by the legends of Pendle Hill witches. A fantastic Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun celebrated by Christian Luke Brady’s fuzz drone (Fargon) and Ryley Walker’s infinitesimal backwards guitar.

“Spiral Galaxy” deserves a place in the musical atlas of galaxies, creatively possible, galactically sensitive, just stellar.
