THE WATCHMAKERS

PSYCHEDELIC MANCHESTER

Chi sono The Watchmakers?
W (RM) – Oltre a me Rich Maitland (voce, chitarra), Ian Maitland (batteria), Adam Lewis (chitarra, tastiere), Andy Lewis (basso).

Come ci siete arrivati?

W (RM) – Inizialmente deriva dai Beatles e George Harrison.

W (RM) – ‘To Be Part of You’ era una canzone non completata dal primo EP.

Una risposta a “The Watchmakers (UK)”

  1. English translation…

    THE WATCHMAKERS
    PSYCHEDELIC MANCHESTER
    by Giampiero Fleba

With several singles and a vivid live activity, The Watchmakers from Manchester are building a musical history in the sign of British neopsychedelia very active in recent years also in an underground planetary context that seems unstoppable. We talked with their singer and guitarist Rich Maitland.

    (P) Who are the Watchmakers? How did the idea of playing together, have you also previous with other bands?

W (RM) We are myself – Rich Maitland (Vox, Guitar), Ian Maitland (Drums), Adam Lewis (Guitar, Keys), Andy Lewis (Bass).
Myself and Ian are brothers and have played in previous bands together since we were 18/19 years old. The Watchmakers formed from the ashes of a previous band when Adam joined us and our old Bass player Tom in 2012. It was at a The Brian Jonestown Massacre gig in Manchester that we decided to form the band. Andy Joined in April 2013 to complete the current line up.

    (P) Manchester is an important city in the history of British rock music, somehow you feel influenced by musical movements / currents born in your town?

W (RM) It’s hard not to be influenced by the music that has come our of Manchester and the North West of England. We’re all huge fans of The Verve, The Stone Roses, Doves etc and also bands from Liverpool such as The Beatles and The Coral. You can probably hear nuggets of Manchester’s rich musical history within The Watchmakers sound and songs but I think we manage to create our own unique blend of noise to compliment what’s gone before us.

    (P) How did you come to the first single, an EP with four songs that despite being declared demo play beautifully even offering your personal research of psychedelic music. What has led you to develop this research? Perhaps by musicians who have inspired you, cultural movements, expressive potentialities, aesthetic interests? What is your idea of psychedelia?

W (RM) Psychedelia is a term that is hard to pin down. To us it means colour and freedom and taking the mind on a journey to some place else through the medium of sound. We have always been influnced by bands such as The 13th Floor Elevators, The Doors, The Velvet Underground and The Beatles 1966-68 era when they broke down the boundaries of pop music, but also by post modern neo-psych bands such as Spiritualized, BJM, BRMC etc. Each band offers a slightly different take on the ‘Psych’ genre and open the door to discover more obscure, experiential or underground bands and songs that can have an influence on our writing.
Through our writing we aim to make the music uplifting and try to take the listener to an almost other-wordly or spiritual place. But we also try to make sure our music has a groove and relentless beating heart at the core of it.
Around the time I was writing the songs for the first E.P I had been reading and researching Buddhist ideals so the sense of bettering the self and ego is maybe subconsciously in some the lyrics too, particularly in songs like The 7th Step.

    (P) Your debut was published by Box Bedroom Label, a small label that publishes limited editions and each copy is almost unique with a series of inserts and gadgets which make it small masterpieces of underground art and music. I think your single is by far amongst the gems of the catalog, tell us about this EP, have you also contributed to the graphics?

W (RM) Thankyou! We are really proud of that E.P and the fact it sold out in 4-5 Days.
Yes the artwork was all produced by ourselves or our friends.
The image of the hand/eye for the Cover art was originally created by my friend Jimi Shea who is a talented artist based out of Manchester. Adam took his Hand and Eye and created combined it with the paisley to give it the throw back 60’s feel.
The other artwork was designed by Ian and I think it all works perfectly as part of the release.
Kev from Box Bedroom was amazing to work with and we’d love to release more stuff through the label in the future.

    (P) Already from this single, is perceived as the East attracts you, especially India and the spirituality of his culture. On YouTube there is a an acoustic version of ‘The 7th Step’ at the BBC in which you play the sitar. Also your lyrics offer ideas of this contamination. Where does all this interest for Indian music and culture?

W (RM) It probably stems from the Beatles and George Harrison initially! Adam plays the sitar in that video and he is very interested in Ravi Shankar and other Indian music.
As mentioned earlier, the lyrics are based around Buddhist / Eastern ideas of bettering the self, perception of the mind and letting go of negativity and the weights that shackle the mind from being truly open.

    (P) The East ‘lights up’ even further your second single ‘Illumination’ and this time on Loaded Soul. Is it your label? Could you tell us about this single? Do you have your own studio?

W (RM) Yes Loaded Soul was a small label we set up last year to release the Illumination single. All of our music to date has been recorded in our Studio in Manchester and produced by Adam. Illumination was actually mixed by someone else which p[produced a slightly heavier sound than the first collection of songs. Lyrically it’s slightly more aggressive with ideas of youth culture and rebellion against what society tells you to be.

    (P) Even here on the sleeve appears the hand with an eye, almost your identification logo. A powerful symbol that crosses time and many cultures (from pre-Columbian to the Eastern ones) with different meanings but always associated with protective virtues. Among the most shared meanings it expresses the link between seeing / observing and doing / action (the wachmaker). But what does it represent for you?

Yeah, the concept stemmed from the ‘all seeing eye’ type of philosophy in those Mayan / Eastern cultures. I like art and music to provoke thought and questions so we wanted an image that would represent the Eastern sound that runs through our music whilst also portraying Spirituality and the mystery that surrounds the Human mind / God / Religion etc.

    (P) Musically the single is beautiful, among our favorites of 2014. There is a BBC video of Illumination live on YouTube, two guitars chasing each other in a constellation of effects. It transmits a lovely harmony between you, do you play a lot live? Is there a concert you play recently that you feel particularly successful? What do you think of this flowering of psychedelic festivals?

W (RM) We play live in the UK regularly yes, and we have a reputation for being better live than on record! I think playing live suits the sound of the band and our music as we can really impose the full scale and depth of our sound onto the audience. When we play live we try to play in front of Visuals and light incense sticks to give the crowd a multi-sensory experience of sound, sight, smell etc.
We have been playing a lot of festivals in the UK this summer such as Isle Of Wight and Secret Garden Party Festival which were both amazing shows. We played at Kendal Calling festival earlier this month and that was potentially the best gig we have played to date and felt like something special was happening!
We have been lucky enough to play a lot of Psych festivals in the last year and it’s really amazing to be part of them and play with so many amazing bands putting their own stamp on psychedelic music.

    (P) We arrived at your third single ‘To Be Part Of You / Kimnara’ released on cassette issued by Liverpool label Black Hand, to use a football jargon your ‘triplete’ of 2014!! Again two beautiful songs and visionary illustrations. Could you told us about it and why you chose to go out on a cassette? A format that seemed lost but there is a whole underground scene that offers them yet, it seems an ideological / aesthetic choice rather than to limit costs.

W (RM) To Be Part Of You was an unfinished song we had from the first E.P. I always had the basic song worked out in terms of the melody and always wanted the reverse vocals at the end as an outro but we hadn’t managed to crack playing it live. Adam came up with the killer baseline and then did a great job adding the gorgeous guitars and keys over the top. The results were so good that we felt we had to release it!
Blak Hand Records are a great little label and it seemed like fun to release something on a new format following the 2 vinyl releases earlier in the year. I think it’s important for people to still own music in a physical form.

    (P) Being your singles almost all sold out, will you reissue it or collect them in an album compilation?

W (RM) We hope to have an album out next year which will probably feature some of the songs we have released to date. Maybe one day we can release a collection if the demand is there but we have approx 15-20 songs that we have worked on for the last 2 years that we want to put out as a piece of art we can be proud of and see what happens from there!

    (P) The last from you is another beautiful song ‘Kiss the Sun’ only released as download some weeks ago, is it an advance the debut album? From your updates on social we understand that it is imminent. Could you give us a preview of the content of the album and when you expect to publish it? Will you released on a label or by yourself? Is there already a title?

W (RM) Hopefully we can make a beautiful sounding record next year. We will be going into the studio within the next few months to start work on it. Kiss The Sun is in contention for the album but we don’t have anything concrete decided as of yet as we have so many ideas to try and choose from. We don’t have a name for the album yet, maybe ‘Keep Believing’ of something like that….?
