Partiamo da Londra per incontrare una coppia di musicisti tra i protagonisti di quella generazione che a partire dal nuovo millennio ha reimmaginato il folk con rinnovato senso di apertura e comunità. The Left Outsides sono Alison Cotton e Mark Nicholas un nucleo che si sviluppa nella seconda metà dei 2000 dalla family tree di The Eighteenth Day Of May, meravigliosa genealogia da cui emergono altre notevoli formazioni come The See See, Lake Ruth, Hanging Stars, Thelightshines, Trimdom Grange Explosion. Porzione significativa del neofolk psichedelico inglese. Dopo il live “A Place to Hide” (ristampato su vinile da Cardinal Fuzz / Feeding Tube), questo singolo su Sonido Polifonico è il passo in studio più recente di The Left Outsides verso una ricerca dove la 
tradizione espande in un flusso visionario suggestivo come una narrazione del possibile. La voce di Mark anima ‘As Night Falls’ una ballata notturna di intensa bellezza su delicati bagliori elettroacustici e leggere percussioni. Alison canta ‘The Wind No Longer Stirs the Trees’ e incanta nel solco folk rock. Armonie e melodie come tratti e ritratti di paesaggi, situazioni o persone, privi di confini come luoghi di transito attraversati dai venti dell’ispirazione. Dopo un volo transoceanico benvenuti nella stanza dei fiori! Workshop musicale neopsychfolk nel Maine rurale allestito da Ash Brooks e Matt Lajoie. Le idee germogliate in tre anni di attività hanno prodotto una discografia impressionante, lavori di artigianato underground curatissimi in varie versioni comprese fantastiche art editions. Ed è solo l’aspetto più recente in seguito all’esperienza del chitarrista Matt Lajoie lungo gli anni 2010 con Herbcraft, Cursillistas, come solista anche con lo pseudonimo ML Wha. In coppia sviluppano progetti multiformi tra riflessi acidi elettrici (Ash & Herb) ed euritmie cosmologiche (Starbirthed). Insieme anche nelle 
uscite solo come in questo EP di Ash Brooks che descrive il suo cammino verso Flower Room. “Temple of the Roses” è una gemma folkedelica di delicati equilibri elettroacustici in cui convivono percezioni intense in armonia con la natura. La calma mistica di ‘Shasta’ evolve da un flusso di droni su scale raga. Chitarre e synths danzano insieme a tablas, sitar e flauti confluendo nel caleidoscopio ritmico di ‘Mage’ per unirsi ai suoni di un’alba estatica che si leva da ‘Rana Mu’ con sciami fuzz a brillare tra la vegetazione. Note visibili e invisibili che ‘Realm of Sights’ trasporta nel canto di un coinvolgente finale ritualistico.

Restiamo nel nord-est per spostarci in Québec dove Mothland Records realizza questo split single in cui la leggendaria band giapponese Acid Mothers Temple e gli apprendisti psychrockers Yoo Doo Right di Montreal si riuniscono per suggellare la loro amicizia nata nel corso di un lungo tour in Nord America nel 2018. Un progetto pensato anche per supportare il Protégeons Montréal-Nord Ensemble (varie iniziative per fronteggiare l’emergenza sanitaria causata dal Covid-19) e il Camp Unist’ot’en (organizzazione che aiuta le popolazioni indigene minacciate dall’opera di sfruttamento massiccio dell’industria estrattiva). La musica scaturisce da un vinile 7″ verde acqua 
trasparente e una bellissima copertina con due figure dei tarocchi simbolicamente rappresentate dall’Imperatore e dall’Appeso. Il padre e i giovani in crescita. ‘Silver Points and Lines’ ci riporta nel multiverso Acid Mothers Temple lungo vaporose melodie vocali nello sviluppo estatico di chitarre e synths a plasmare nuovi fermenti cosmici. ‘Speed Guru’ rivela ammirazione ma anche promesse che Yoo Doo Right, cogliendo il proprio nome da “Monster Movie” dei Can, esprimono sulla cosmolinea neo-krautrock. E il potente ribollire del generatore ritmico che si stende sugli echi siderali di un chitarrismo avvolgente ne mantiene viva l’attesa per nuovi interessanti sviluppi.

Restiamo a nord per una coast to coast fino a Portland, Oregon, il terminale lisergico di Dave Berkham (Lead Guitar & Vocals), John Jenne (Rhythm Guitar), Bob Fountain (Vox Organ & Mellotron), Ian Bixby (Drums and Percussion) e Cam Mazzia (Bass): The Reverberations. Dopo gli albums “Mess Up Your Mind” (2016) e “Changes” (2019) questo quarto singolo, pubblicato dalla spagnola Bickerton Records, succede a “Milder High / Sunshine” uscito lo scorso anno su Hypnotic Bridge e sancisce una presenza di spicco nel panorama neopsichedelico mondiale. Cinque anni di attività creativa che partono dai luoghi tipici di fragranze jingle jangle per inoltrarsi in una girandola garage beat eccentrica condotta dalle tastiere dove la mutazione del particolare evade la traccia armonica 
avvolgendo con classe e disinvoltura fraseggi elettroacustici, poliritmie e arrangiamenti vocali. The Reverberations emettono con rigore vinilico, sensibilità grafica nell’ennesima stupenda copertina e download per chi non ama più il supporto fisico ma trae comunque piacere nell’ascolto digitale. Un piacere garantito anche da ‘Palm Reader’ e ‘Under Your Spell’ (inedite su album come le tracce dei singoli precedenti) che aggiungono linfa stroboscopica nei riflessi di Blues Magoos, Seeds e Byrds.

In volo su un altro oceano e poi sorvolando l’Australia fino a Perth sulla costa occidentale per ritornare a parlare di Mt. Mountain. Dal precedente entusiasmante incontro con Plenirockium nel 2016 in occasione dell’uscita di “Dust”, la ricerca musicale del quintetto ha svolto un percorso che ha modellato sonorità cosmiche contemplative nelle forme più strutturate di “Golden Rise” (2018) entrando anche in una dimensione più terrena ed eterea al tempo stesso. Canzoni che si svolgono nel giro di pochi minuti generando magici equilibri di stupende polifonie, vibranti nel fluido intersecarsi di due chitarre. E nel frattempo i due albums del leader cantante 
polistrumentista Stephen Bailey. Idee che riprendono a scorrere come preludio al quarto album di Mt.Mountain in questo nuovo singolo pubblicato dalla francese Six Tonnes De Chair. ‘Tassels’ parte in rapido motorik su cui chitarre e tastiere dirgono un orchestra di echi e voci in un fantastico susseguirsi. Un segmento krautrock che prosegue nello spazio crepuscolare di ‘Deluge’ generato dai sintetizzatori su variazioni etnopsichedeliche orientaleggianti di delicati intrecci corde – percussioni. Chiusura del cerchio globe trotter con ritorno in UK per festeggiare la 200a pubblicazione Rocket Recordings. Un senso compiuto anche nel riaccendere favolosi intrecci underground accaduti a Bristol e proporre i musicisti con cui l’etichetta aveva realizzato la prima uscita nel 1998, un 7″ split che affacciava il culto ultrapsichedelico The Heads ai punk-noisers Lillydamwhite. Il chitarrista Paul Allen in parallelo alla sua notevole presenza con The Heads mette in moto Anthroprophh nel 2012 come progetto krautrock. Dal 2013 evolve in power trio con Gareth Turner bassista dei Lillydamwhite e Jesse Webb batterista dei Big Naturals per proseguire con una copiosa discografia fino ad “Omegaville” del 2017. Semi di un’apocalisse supersonica che sommano potenti visioni hard-blues-acid-punk mutuate dai 70s, grondanti rock corrosivo, in sensuali sviluppi futuribili. La formazione di “Toilet Circuit” accoglie il 
batterista Steve Dew, protegonista con Paul Allen negli spettacolari Fuzz Against Junk supergruppo psych-jazz di Bristol nei primi 2000. Un’altra riconnessione ad uno stato di sostanza primordiale che si compie per sfrecciare con ‘Six Six Sigma’ in orbita Deviants – Pink Fairies a propulsione fuzz e plasma chitarristico fino a perdersi in uno uno sciame di feedback ribollente. ‘Too Old’ genera space rock con un wah wah travolgente hendrixiano in un iperblues catartico. ‘Toilet Circus’ si espande da un riff granitico saturo di distorsori per esplodere nel rumore di fondo degli amplificatori e sfumare in un gospel ipnotico. UFO 7″ in vinile rosa verso dimensioni sconosciute.

Let’s start from London to meet a couple of musicians among the protagonists of that generation that since the new millennium has reimagined folk with a renewed sense of openness and community. Alison sings ‘The Wind No Longer Stirs the Trees’ and enchants in the folk rock groove. Harmonies and melodies such as traits and portraits of landscapes, situations or people. After a transoceanic flight welcome to the Flower Room! Neopsychfolk music workshop in rural Maine set up by Ash Brooks and Matt Lajoie. The ideas sprouted in three years of activity have produced an impressive discography, well-kept underground crafts in various versions including fantastic art editions. And it is only the most recent aspect following the experience of guitarist Matt Lajoie over the years 2010 with Herbcraft, Cursillistas, as a soloist also with the pseudonym ML Wha. As a couple they develop multiform projects between electric acid reflections (Ash & Herb) and cosmological harmonies (Starbirthed). Together also in the releases of this EP by Ash Brooks which describes her journey towards Flower Room. “Temple of the Roses” is a folkedelic gem of delicate electroacoustic balances in which intense perceptions coexist in harmony with nature. The mystical calm of ‘Shasta’ evolves from a stream of drones on raga scales. Guitars and synths dance along with tablas, sitar and flutes merging into the rhythmic kaleidoscope of ‘Mage’ to join the sounds of an ecstatic dawn that rises from ‘Rana Mu’ with swarms of fuzz shining through the vegetation. Visible and invisible notes that ‘Realm of Sights’ carries in the singing of an engaging ritualistic ending.

Let’s stay in the north-east to move to Québec where Mothland Records releases this split single in which the legendary Japanese band Acid Mothers Temple and the apprentice psychrockers Yoo Doo Right from Montreal come together to seal their friendship born during a long tour in the North America in 2018. A project also designed to support the Protégeons Montréal-Nord Ensemble (various initiatives to deal with the health emergency caused by Covid-19) and Camp Unist’ot’en (an organization that helps indigenous populations threatened by the work of massive exploitation of the extractive industry). The music springs from a transparent teal 7 “vinyl and a beautiful cover with two tarot figures symbolically represented by the Emperor and the Hanged Man. The father and the growing youth. ‘Silver Points and Lines’ takes us back to the multiverse Acid Mothers Temple along vaporous vocal melodies in the ecstatic development of guitars and synths to shape new cosmic ferments. ‘Speed Guru’ reveals admiration but also promises that Yoo Doo Right, taking its name from Can’s “Monster Movie”, express on the cosmoline neo-krautrock. And the powerful bubbling of the rhythmic generator that extends over the sidereal echoes of an enchanting guitarism keeps the wait for new interesting developments alive.
