Bhopal’s Flowers

“Alstroemeria – A Journey On Earth & Beyond”

The notes sown by the Canadian Bhopal’s Flowers in the fertile soil of psychedelia sprout with the second album “Alstroemeria – A Journey On Earth & Beyond”, name inspired by a plant similar to a lily whose varieties bloom in multicolored flowerings. A terrestrial ‘flower power’ guide of bright tones that the Montreal quartet expresses in the sounds of a warm neo-60s vision, aiming to recapture seductive west coast harmonic progressions in which the melodies are chromatic variables.

Lionel Pezzano (vocals, 6 & 12 strings guitars, sitar, târ, mandolin, piano, keyboards, bass, percussions), Blandine Pezzano Miart (backing vocals, tanpura, percussions), Jonathan St Laurent (bass, backing vocals) and Jeremy Thoma (drums, backing vocals) perform a remarkable job of paying homage to the more pop and bright forms of psychedelia with recurring oriental influences in the songs, continually evolving their characteristic elements.

The raga structures generated by traditional Indian and Middle Eastern instruments evoke a range of exploratory trends of the 60s expressed at times by iconic groups such as the Beatles (via George Harrison) and Byrds but also by the popsike-freakbeat drifts of Tomorrow, July, Strawbwerry Alarm Clock or later by the Paisley Underground and its surroundings chronicles (Plasticland). A kind of music box with a snow globe found in Aight Asbury which, when overturned, falls a rain of sitar, tanpura, tabla, Rickenbacker, vocal arrangements, flyers op art.

“Alstroemeria – A Journey On Earth & Beyond” starts from the 7inch jewel released last year on Hypnotic Bridge and goes beyond with the concept idea of a journey that celebrates the Earth in the passing of the 24 hours of a day, above which hovers the propitiatory symbolism of a flower chosen for ancient ceremonial rites. Each song takes place at a specific time in the four phases of the morning-afternoon-evening-night cycle. An oneiric journey that tells ‘the cosmic and earthly adventures of the human soul surrounded by numerous guides, divinities and historical characters’. Every hour and every change of light enter into relationship with the music and color the vision of their specific energy, of projections towards that particular moment ‘from its very first sunrays to its late moonbeams’.

16 passages through the ecosystems ‘sunshine pop’ and ‘moonlight pop’: from the aurora of ‘Enjoy Your Life on Earth [5 am]’ to the morning of ‘Napoleon Candy Sweet [7 am]’ and ‘Hail to the Sun [9 am]’, from the afternoon of ‘Cosmic Reflector [5 pm]’ to sunset of ‘Love in Fall [9 pm]’, from the evening of ‘What About You’ to the night of ‘A Night At The Devachan [1 am]’ to the finale at the flamboyant dawn of the indo beat cover of ‘I Feel Free’ by Cream. Good music to listen to today on Earth Day, an invitation to celebrate the environment and continue the journey for its protection every day.
