The Invisible World of Beautify Junkyards” (2018).

The Eighteenth Day Of May).

The phase four of Beautify Junkyards stretches in depth from the most recent point of their journey “The Invisible World of Beautify Junkyards” (2018). Beyond the invisible, in the heart of “Cosmorana”, fourth world to discover ‘exploring many latitudes in music’, as we were told by interviewed in 2016 after the release of their second album “The Beast Shouted Love”. Exploration as the central theme of a creative process in which the psychedelic folk matrix of ‘hauntology vibration’ has developed over time an organic and dizzying current, a research in motion in acoustic-electric-electronic sound. Sensibly visionary contemplation attributable to the idea of breadth not only as a function of music played with extraordinary executive skill but also as a cultural essence in expressing itself through different languages in which Portugal and Brazil trace the reference horizon of the Lisbon sextet. Alongside the historical members João Branco Kyron (vocals and keyboards), João Moreira (acoustic guitar and keyboards), Sergue Ra (bass) and Antonio Watts (drums and percussion), the arrival of the new singer Martinez (replacing Rita Vian now vocals in fado music) and the confirmation of Helena Espvall ( at the top of the neofolk of the 2000s with the Espers, partner of Masaki Batoh and many other projects) in offering the enchanting resonances of flute and cello.

“Cosmorama” is a stunning album and reveals the multi-dimension it promises through a series of suggestions in projecting scenarios with different intensity changes, guiding you to listen with omnipresent delicacy. The gradual superimposition of cosmic, psychedelic, pastoral hues proceeds with equal ease between popular roots (Tropicalism) and avant-garde refinements. Literature and visual arts transit with density and transparency. The spirit of Nature pervades every note like a biosonic outpouring and recites fantastic chants.

A constellation of keyboards (in the wake of the soundscapes of “Starlit Remembrance”, a recent solo project by João Branco Kyron) introduce ‘Dupla Exposição’ as the background to an ecstatic rise of ecoreverberated flute, field recordings and muffled percussion. The beautiful video made with the direction of João Pedro Moreira adds wonder by evoking Man Ray’s dada rayograms. A gurgling beat that is lost in the Tropicália hues of ‘Reverie’ on the voice of guest Nina Miranda (which fans of acid jazz have enjoyed with Smoke City). A voice that also shines in ‘Parangolé’, an intoxicating dance, indeed different dances and times to move at a rhythm and then change suddenly. Velvety vocal cords that modulate dreaming of Robert Wyatt, a secret power that becomes an instrument and returns to the psychfolk space of the title track ‘Cosmorama’. Rarefied electronics move ‘The Sphynx’ and ‘Zodiak Klub’ towards the Middle East in a remote oscillating dub on the flow of echoguitars and eccentric rhythms.

Atmospheres dictated by a minimal immediacy with extraordinary intuition. Like the salty air that you breathe in ‘A Garden By The Sea Harp’ generated by a flute lapping, cyclical in proceeding between percussive resonances on the vocals of Martinez and João, on the deep melodic twists of the cello and the strings plucked by the guest, classical harpist Eduardo Raon. Intense cosmic folkedelia like a warm vision in the harmonies of ‘Vali’ and ‘The Collector’ over vaguely Portished echoes leading to ‘Deep Green’ and another guest presence as well as enchanting voice of Allison Brice (Lake Ruth, ex-The Eighteenth Day Of May). ‘The Fountain’ is the final symphony of harmonic impressions which are vivid perceptions orchestrated by harp, cello, samples. A free thought that fearlessly imagines that another world is possible, that aspires for life as intensely as a fountain of spring water.

“Cosmorama” fourth movement of Beautify Junkyards in the land of sound, a creative impulse that keep on going to open horizons.
