“A Sudden Realization”

Secret Entertainment (LP & CD)

“A Sudden Realization” è allo stesso tempo conferma e magnifica rivelazione nel variare i cromatismi con naturalezza, improvvisando sulle trame orientaleggianti di ‘Food for Thought’, ‘Lungs of Modern Times’ o nella meraviglia anadolu psych ‘The Girl with the Purple Hair’.

The psychedelic fantasies of Astral Bazaar return with the follow up to “Pictures Unrelated” (2018), both radiant and pensive, physical and immaterial. Neoprogressive splendor still shaped by the Helsinki sextet composed by Ville Manninen (vocals, percussion), Lauri Loikkanen (guitar, backing vocals), Pekka Lehtelä (guitar), Mikael Laaksonen (guitar, saxophone, backing vocals), Eetu Peltoluhta (drums) and Jukka Sainio (bass). “A Sudden Realization” is a concept album whose events take place in the distant future. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a single person (Vincent) who struggles to find the right interpretation of reality and gradually makes his way to enlightenment. Glades of fertile thoughts in which by practicing to imagine the future, one reflects on a difficult present for humanity. The musical whole is dynamic both in its original substance and in exploring regions of the past on jazz rock rainbows traced by the legendary Gong but also by a Finnish genetic imprint transmitted by bands such as Wigwam, Tasavallan Presidentti and related solo projects of Pekka Pohjola and Jukka Tolonen. The listening experience proceeds in an invigorating journey through time also evoked by the avant-pop-wave harmonics of Monochrome Set and XTC wandering in the lush forests of Ozric Tentacles while elements of psych modernity flow reflecting King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard or Altın Gün.

Astral Bazaar are however always oriented on contrasts with bright colors in search of stories with a poetic content that prefer the tones of a wide crossover between the components of the sound, the variety of influences that are recognized in their songs but with an original and typically Finnish vision in a vital scene that we recently visited through the works of Polymoon, Kairon; IRSE! and Iterum Nata.

“A Sudden Realization” is both confirmation and magnificent revelation in varying the colors naturally, improvising on the eastern – middleeastern plots of ‘Food for Thought’, ‘Lungs of Modern Times’ or in the wonder anadolu psych of ‘The Girl with the Purple Hair ‘. Overwhelming rhythmics chase eccentric guitar flares and sax gusts highly suggestive not only in the instrumental shape of ‘Vincent’s Dream’ and in the playful funk pulses of ‘Cops & Thieves’ but also where the disturbing perspectives of ‘The Y10K Problem’ and ‘Dwellin in the Apocalypse’ lurk, where the tale of ‘Embrace the Reverb’ comes true and where the enlightment envelops ‘Behind the Narrow Door’ as part of the whole in a final whirlwind of electric excitement.

Astral Bazaar tell stories almost to be their own big eyes and as such see colors that turn into music, a dance with infinite shades between the poles of sound, the return of the taste for adventure.
