Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O.

Have You Seen The Other Side Of The Sky?” (Ace Fu – Nod and Smile, 2006) e “Acid Guru Pond” (Fire Records 2016, AMT + Guru Guru + Bardo Pond).

Queste registrazioni accreditate a Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. feat. Geoff Leigh sono state mixate e prodotte da Makoto Kawabata lo scorso anno e tradotte in 2 albums: “Reverse Of Rebirth Reprise” (Nod and Smile Records) e “Chosen Star Child’s Confession” (Riot Season). Una risposta a “Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. feat. Geoff Leigh (Japan, UK)”

  1. English translation…

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. feat. Geoff Leigh

“Reverse Of Rebirth Reprise” (LP + CD Nod and Smile Records)
“Chosen Star Child’s Confession” (LP + CD Riot Season)

I would like to talk to you about this project with some introductory nods because the history of the musicians involved is so dense and exciting that it deserves at least a trace both for those who approach them for the first time and for those looking for more details… It starts from Japan where there is a group that like few others has been exploring sound and its forms for 25 years. Following them is an almost impossible task with a discography similar to a boundless landscape that now exceeds one hundred titles but every time their music takes place in the listening, it performs a magic. Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. (which stands for Underground Freak Out) bewilder and fascinate at the same time, totally dedicated to their art both in the public image and in the works (many self-produced on Acid Mothers Temple) from graphics to music often crossed by a vein of mysticism. They love to identify themselves as ‘soul collective’, cosmic neo-hippies, environmentalists, direct descendants of Japanese groups who since 1967 have turned their eyes on San Francisco and on the cultural revolution of the ‘union of love and activism’ (Human Be-In) inspired by that amalgam without limits between the fusion of cultures and the collapse of musical barriers that triggered the birth of an underground scene (with groups like Taj Mahal Travelers, Far East Family Band, Flower Travellin ‘Band and many others) masterfully narrated by Julian Cope in his ‘Japrocksampler’.

An ever-changing collective that from its native Osaka opens up to the world as fervent travelers always expertly guided by the guitar master ‘speed guru’ Makoto Kawabata, a tireless researcher in activity since the late 70s (with the Dark Revolution Collective). Years of practice acquired mainly through an impressive series of concerts and sessions that have shaped the style and technique (sometimes reminiscent of the former Chrome Helios Creed) in which he directs an orchestra of effects with phaser, wah-wah, reverberations to flash in the guitar flow in constant dialogue with the keyboards and synthesizers by Higashi Hiroshi, together from the origins. The psychedelic space hard-rock matrix of AMT expands in speed and volume often according to developments dear to radical improvisers but is also capable of rarefying in ethno-folk territories and drone music (as well in “La Novia” or in the project Floating Flowers). Powerful sounds that continuously reinvent themselves in improvisation and communicate in their ideal dimension on live (including several tours in Italy). Expressive evidence where the titles of the songs and albums look like poems that flow with clarity even in sensational tributes to Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, King Crimson, Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Amon Düül II, Miles Davis, Terry Riley or science fiction literature (and authors like Isaac Asimov and PK Dick).

To all this is added a long family tree of side projects, productions (including albums by fellow countrymen Hibushibire) and direct collaborations where Acid Mothers Gong (Daevid Allen and Gilly Smith) and Acid Mothers Guru Guru (Mani Neumeier) stand out. The latest collaboration implemented is precisely this meeting between Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. with Geoff Leigh, flutist, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist, known to fans of English progressive rock for being part of the legendary Henry Cow. Born in London in 1945, his musical career is enormous, started from his parents’ passion for jazz music and from his first steps to wind instruments with Crazy Mabel in the wake of a jazz-blues-rock borrowed from the admiration for the sax evolutions of Graham Bond and Dick Heckstall-Smith in the Graham Bond Organization. Then the passion for an English jazz scene in full creative splendor and the vision of concerts by groups such as Spontaneous Music Ensemble and Brotherhood Of Breath. In 1969 the meeting in Portobello with the guitarist Gerald Frazer Fitz-Gerald (G.F. Fitzgerald) who involves him in the recordings of the magnificent experimental psych-prog album “Mouseproof” (UNI, 1971) and introduces him to the avant-garde musicians scene in London, Cambridge and Canterbury. From here on there is a crescendo of encounters and participations: John Martyn, Zakarrias, Lady June, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Deavid Allen, Mike Oldfield (curiosity to discover his contribution in ‘I Love You So’ A side of a single BYG recorded in London in 1971 by the singer-actress Valérie Lagrange).

He also often plays with Hatfield and the North (he will participate in the recordings of their first album) and with the experimental collective Ottawa Company where he meets all Henry Cow and their drummer Chris Cutler, his old schoolmate in the London district of Sutton. The pleasure is mutual and so Geoff Leigh becomes the fifth Henry Cow also in sharing the social and political instances of the growing plural underground counterculture movement (compelling biography: ‘Henry Cow: The World Is a Problem’ by Benjamin Piekut). The debut is already a masterpiece: “Legend” (Virgin, 1973) avant-garde of an experimental jazz rock unique in the panorama of the early 70s and the beginning of a decade of life which includes the organization of the Rock in Opposition festival (1978) and the birth of the European progressive rock movement RIO. Geoff Leigh continues along the 70s and 80s both in reiterating the presence in some later Henry Cow albums, in significant contributions for Slapp Happy and founding groups like Radar Favorites (with his wife Cathy Williams and old friend GF Fitzgerald), Red Balune, Black Sheep until his first solo “The Chemical Bank” (an EP 7 “released in 1979 on its MCCB – Mass Culture Control Bureau – label) and the 1988 album “From Here To Drums” with Frank Wuyts former Belgian keyboard player Aksak Maboul. An intense trail that flows and adheres to the post punk English and European scenario alternating free jazz, ambient and world music projects.

Today Geoff Leigh is a splendid seventy-five year old and beautiful example of exceptional physical strength, recovering from major health problems that seemed to compromise his activity as a musician, he embarked on a path of rehabilitation that brought him back on stage at the end of the 90s with the Ex Wise Heads (by Colin Edwin , Porcupine Tree bass player) and much more including participation in the Faust reunion, in the Uli Trepte Quintett album, another meeting with musicians from the krautrock era and the recent The Artaud Beats project with ex-Henry Cow John Greaves and Chris Cutler. The collaboration between Geoff Leigh and Makoto Kawabata begins already in the early 2000s with a series of releases under their names based on long improvisations of ecstatic winds (with a prevalence of flute) and whirling guitars among which “Spatial Roots” stands out (Acid Mothers Temple, 2016 ). Although in the sound of the AMT the winds are not constant presences, they have however assumed important roles over time and with remarkable results as in the beautiful “Have You Seen The Other Side Of The Sky?” (Ace Fu – Nod and Smile, 2006) and “Acid Guru Pond” (Fire Records 2016, AMT + Guru Guru + Bardo Pond). A contribution that now offers other suggestions with Geoff Leigh for a new chapter where the flute and saxes push the space-psych-prog flow in the riverbed of an intense jazz rock experience.

The event is manifested in a series of live sessions dominated by long improvisations recorded on 25 July 2018 at the London studios Sam and Rachel’s of Rachel Kenedy and Sam Ayers (founders of the Flowers last heirs of the jangly-pop-folk-psych sound of bands such as Talulah Gosh and Pastels). These recordings credited to Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. feat. Geoff Leigh were mixed and produced by Makoto Kawabata last year and translated into 2 albums: “Reverse Of Rebirth Reprise” (Nod and Smile Records) and “Chosen Star Child’s Confession” (Riot Season). Among the novelties in the AMT collective there is also the arrival of Jyonson Tsu, second guitar (electric and acoustic) which replaces the ex-Boredoms Mitsuru Tabata and this entrance supports with excellence the gravitational push towards a more cosmic dimension. Part of the sessions reimagine some classics of the AMT repertoire, renewing timbres and colors in surprising versions. ‘Dark Star Blues’, ‘Hello Good Child’ (a special ‘Space Oddity’ in homage to David Bowie) and ‘The Beautiful Blue Ecstasy’ illuminate “Reverse of Rebirth Reprise” and are the recordings characterized by an electro-acoustic spirituality at times crossed by sidereal folk. Differently, the well-known ‘Cometary Orbital Drive’ is rewritten in the more jazz oriented groove of “Chosen Star Child’s Confession” joining the unpublished, pulsating and ultra-electric Gong-like wonders of ‘Nightmarish Heavenly Labyrinth’, ‘Diamond Eyes Are Hurt’ and ‘Infected J Also Live Beast Catastrophe’. From the same London sessions also comes ‘Lemon Ecstasy ~ Pink Lady Lemonade (Sweetheart Sucker Punch)’ just published on the self-produced cd “Pink Lady Lemonade (Double Sweet Sucker Punch)” where AMT land on the astral plane of the cosmic ballad regenerating ‘Pink Lady Lemonade’ with the winds of Geoff Leigh, perhaps the best of all versions of this song. Ultimately 2 hours of total involvement and great music in the hope that something else recorded that July 25, 2018 will be published perhaps in an edition that includes everything. For those wishing to deepen their knowledge of the multiverse Acid Mothers Temple can point to their Youtube channel where the almost complete discography has recently been uploaded.

    Enjoy the Underground Freak Out!
