HILLS

FREAK’N’ROLL FOR THE (INNER) PEACE

A chi vi ispirate maggiormente?

Poi The Myrrors e Silvester Anfang II.

Parecchia roba motorik e hills_master1altri gruppi tedeschi come Gila e Ash Ra Tempel.

Hills – Non pensiamo troppo a queste cose.

2 Risposte a “HILLS (SE) interview”

  1. English translation on request, thanks!

    HILLS
    FREAK’N’ROLL FOR THE (INNER) PEACE

It ‘s really a pleasure keep up our promise to interview Hills not only because “Frid” was the album of 2015 of Plenirockium or to reaffirm the validity of the Swedish underground scene but to learn more about their borderless musical research between multicultural dimensions and atmospheres of electric clangor on new forms of ethno-cosmic psychedelia, drone music, space rock, trance noise. After a long chase we were able to open a conversation via web, make yourself comfortable …

Hills – Hey Hills is a band from Gothenburg. We are 5 members at this point.

    Tore- Vox, organ
    Pelle- Vox, guitar
    Bob- Bass
    Kalle- Vox,guitar
    Hanna – Vox, Drums

And there has been constant changes of the line-up through the years. We have also deliberately made a point of this. Inviting friends to join in when we play live etc.
It keeps jamming and improvising a lot more playful and fun!

    (P) How is the underground scene of Göteborg, is there musical ferment? Is it an interactive dimension?

Hills – I could not tell you since I am not very up to date unfortunately. There are a lot of bands here I and a few good ones that I know like: Yuri Gagarin ( Watch out for their coming LP on Kommun 2 ), Strändernas Svall, Uran, Ill Wicker. Also the band Kif who´s 7 inch is going to kill when it comes out!! And probably a ton of other bands that I don´t know of

    (P) We love music from Sweden since the 60s, a fertile land full of original rock alchemies and underground expressions, thinking of Baby Grandmothers / Mecki Mark Men or Pärson Sound / Harvester / Träd, Gräs & Stenar or Samla Mammas Manna, then 80s garage and neopsychedelia, the space rock in the 90s and now a scene of great relevance in the planetarian landscaspe. How all this affects on your music and also, have you an idea of the reasons and origins of this Swedish crativity?

Hills – We are influenced by the early Swedish psych bands like TGS, Harvester, Arbete & Fritid and all that.I also like newer bands like Dungen, he is a brilliant producer and they always sound amazing. The Myrrors, Silvester Anfang II.

    (P) How did you come to the selftitled debut in 2009, a vinyl edition on Intergalactic Tactics Records? Is it your own label? Could you tell us about this album and its fantastic artwork (then issued also on CD by Sulartron with the addition of two songs)? Do you have your own studio?

Hills – Well we had been rehearsing and playing live for a bit and had some loose song structures we felt we wanted to record. The album was made quite spontaneously in a professional studio in a couple of days. We knew what we wanted sound wise but not necessarily the means of how to get that sound. So there was a bit of discussion between the band and the recording engineer at times.. I still feel it is a cool record. And it´s getting re-released by Cardinal Fuzz with some extra stuff, re-mastered! So everyone who wants to can get hold of it soon. we are in the process of mixing some bonus material for that release right now. Intergalactic Tactics was our own label. We just wanted the stuff out on vinyl and there was not a big market for experimental psych at the time so we decided to release it ourselves. The cover artwork was made by our friend Marus Ivarsson. And I agree I think it´s beautiful! And now we have our own studio. Frid was recorded there.

    (P) Right from the first album your sounds are perceived like a personal research in the context of psychedelic music, even towards interesting space rock sonorities. What has led you to develop this research? Cultural movements, expressive potentialities, aesthetic interests? What is your idea of psychedelia?

Hills – I don´t know what led us up the exploration of sound. I think it is always hard to recount something you have done musically after a while. I can´t even remember what I was thinking about 2 minutes ago.. It´s like you always have an idea about a song or a riff or something and then you get going and when it´s done it´s something different than the original outset, a compromise in a way. Music lives it´s own life. Generally I guess it´s the music we listened to at the time that was a big influence. A lot of motorik stuff, other german bands like Gila and Ash ra Tempel. Not so many bands were doing that kind of thing in Sweden at the time.

    (P) Your music is often approaching to an ethnic and cultural dimension as a link to the origins but even as to a future trend in expressing music developed by experimentation and contamination, is it also a desire in searching new sounds? How about this multi-cultural interests, parhaps the result of travels? And how much Sweden, the mystical and folk tradition of your land, is there in all this?

Hills – We don´t think to hard about these things. This is just the music that comes out through us. I like Swedish folk music very much, we all do and it probably shows in our music in some way. I actually decided today that I will have to learn to play the violin at some point. Which is kind of the essential instrument in Swedish folk music. I have some friends who are folk musicians and they blow me away. At The same time and the same way I enjoy turkish psych or Indian Ragas or 70´s dub from Jamaica. If it´s done with the heart and has the right rough edges it all appeals to me. And all of our influences probably show if you listen carefully 🙂

    (P) 2011 is the year of your second album ‘Master Sleeps’, first on vinyl for Intergalactic Tactics then on CD for Transbustans both quickly sold out and then re-released in 2013 with different cover from Rocket Recordings. How it came your relationship with these labels and why you decided to reissue the vinyl with different sleeve?

Hills – We thought it would be cool to have another sleeve for the re-release since it was on a new label anyway.

    (P) ‘Master Sleeps’ is another beautiful album, balancing electric dynamism (with great guitar sounds) and cosmic atmospheres. What electronic devices do you play? Who is the Master and why he Sleeps?

Hills – Thank you. Well we will use any electronic devices we can get hold of haha. On that particular album I don´t exactly remember but a heap of old dusty amps, guitars, effects and so on. I can´t tell you about the master, sorry.. 😉

    (P) ‘Master Sleeps’ is even more pushed towards the East with the guitar that at times seems inspired by the crystalline tones of the strings in the Middle East (saz or baglama) to the raga resonances of Indian instruments. Also interesting is the rhythmic development and the use of wind instruments. It’s anyway very attractive this proceeding amongst acoustic, electric and electronic sounds, is it a way to go beyond stylistic and temporal boundaries?

Hills – I think your questions are really well thought through. And I wish I could do them justice in my answers. It seems you have analyzed Hills a lot more than we ever will 🙂 That´s the cool thing about music, once it´s released or performed it belongs to everyone. And so everyone hears their own version of it all.. That said I think it´s natural that we evolved between the first and second record. And that the sound changed. We had a clearer vision maybe, at least sound wise.

    (P) Between the two editions of ‘Master Sleeps’, you self-produced a live album that first came out on cassette in 2012 and then released on vinyl by Cardinal Fuzz, we never heard the cassette but the two versions have only ‘Kristallen Den Fina’ in common, why this choice?

Hills – We had a another song ( Frigörande Musik ) we thought was better. And then both the vinyl and cassette would be unique. Ah so you have not heard Frigörande Musik? I think that is a really cool track!

    (P) By the way, the original cover of the cassette is a drawing of a skull whose symbolism is linked to the death which is also a recurring name in the titles of your songs. A concept open to a galaxy of meanings throughout the history of cultures and often connected to change. How death is symbolized in your music and in your songs?

Hills – Well to answer the first part of your your question. I did not draw the cover so I cannot tell you what the artist thought. I think it looks great. And the second part.
Yeah I think that the concept of death is intriguing and it´s also a BIG part of living right? One can not exist without the other 🙂 You can´t cheat death and we all know this. Still, in many ways, we still view death as something negative and very loaded. And we often avoid talking about it which of course would normalize it. We are afraid of it and at the same time it is such a natural part of being human. In the dualist western tradition it´s all opposites right? You are either dead or alive. Heaven or hell. Happy or sad. Good or bad. Which at least to me gets very confusing. Is everything really so separated? Body/ mind? It´s not my experience at least. I don´t know if I have to exist as a body to experience anything, time will tell I guess haha 🙂 So to wrap this question up I would say that death is symbolized in our music through us being alive and playing it 🙂 Not being dead and not playing it.

    (P) Here we are at your last album ” Frid ” that is consolidated on Rocket Recordings. For Plenirockium a masterpiece, from the very evocative title in conveying a concept of inner peace in harmony with nature. Is our interpretation correct? Could you tell us about the ideas that conceived this album and the artwork that illustrates it?

Hills – Yes certainly inner peace. And peace in general. Peace is cool.Well we made the songs. And a couple of songs did not make the album because these were the ones that sounded best together. For me besides being inspired by the music I listen to. And everyday life. The big inspiration was to try and transmit the way we sound when we just play together because we love playing together. And in some way maybe through the music on the record share that feeling, in a sense at least you know?

    (P) One of the creative peaks of Frid is ‘Milarepa’, what inspired you to write a song about this Tibetan mystic also portrayed by various film directors including our fellow countrywoman Liliana Cavani?

Hills – Thank you. I have not seen the film is it good?

    (P) Yes, it is a 1974 film directed by a great Italian cult director today 83 years old with a career guided by a free and unconventional view…

Hills – Because he was as you aptly describe a tibetan mystic and also a great saint. He also wrote beautiful songs/ lyrics and because the Nyingma tradition as a whole is simply beautiful. And when the song was done we thought his name fitted perfectly.

    (P) In ‘Frid’ captivate us also the traces of romanticism, the harmonic repetitiveness in inspiring states of contemplation but also the high level of expressive freedom represented by long songs (a regular feature in your discography) that seem to develop by practices of improvisation. How much improvisation is there in your music? Miles Davis said that “Improvisation is go beyond what you know” …

Hills – Thank you again. Yes there is a lot of improvisation. It all comes from improvisation. Even if songs build on a riff to begin with we try and let them evolve in their own way. Live songs will sound different. When we work in the studio we add overdubs at times, but this is really not very different from improvising live. It´s the same thing done differently. I think Miles said it well in your quote 🙂

    (P) At the end of 2015 you released another live album ‘Live At Daemonens Port’ (2xLP, Kommun 2 , Svensk Psych Aften). Not having had lucky enough to see you in concert and listening to your live albums compared to studio albums, it impresses us as the two dimensions (studio / live) are perceived very spontaneous especially in making your music always at ‘live impact’. Do you often play live and are you planning to come in Italy?

Hills – That was a beautiful evening. The record was recorded with a simple device by Scott ” DR. Space “( Öresund Space Collective ) which gives the whole thing a primitive sound, sometimes a bit harsh maybe. It´s hard to hear the vocals at times but it´s a cool document.
No we don´t play live a lot. Which has many reasons. One being that most of us have kids and families we don´t want to spend a lot of time away from home. Another being that we want to keep the live Hills experience interesting both for our selves and the audience and to be able to choose and play where and when we feel the time and circumstance is right. We have played Italy actually ( Sardinia ). That was a great one!

    Thank you for this interview!
